Baba Issac, a 56-year-old farmer, has been hacked to death.
The man was reportedly hacked to death on his farm by suspected herders at Gurufufu village in Kwaku ward of Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
A resident of Gurufufu, who confirmed the incident when Daily Trust visited the community on Sunday, said the incident happened on Friday.
He said the farmer went to the farm on Friday with two of his children to clear their farmland ahead of the rainy season when he met some herders with their cows eating his cassava leaves.
He said the farmer and his children got angry after seeing the cows destroying their cassava farm and one of the farmer’s sons angrily hit one of the cows with a cutlass.
He said the incident degenerated into a serious confrontation between the farmer, his children and the herders and that in the process, one of herders removed his cutlass and cut the farmer on the head. “One of the herders angrily pulled out his cutlass and stabbed the farmer on the head, which prompted his two children to quickly rush back home to report the incident,” he said.
He said some members of the community mobilised to the farm and conveyed the farmer to Kwaku hospital, where he died.
He said the vigilantes, who were informed about the incident, quickly mobilised from Kwaku to the village, even as he said the herders had escaped with their cows before they arrived.
A member of the vigilantes, simply identified as Abednego, who confirmed the incident, said before the vigilantes could arrive at the farm, the herders had already left the farm with their cows. “You know such attacks are always carried out by herders that are migrating from one place to another. So, the moment they commit such a crime, you hardly get them because they don’t move in one direction,” he said.
The vigilante member said some policemen visited the scene of the incident, adding that the deceased had been buried.
